Scar Massage FAQs
When can I start massage?
As soon as your scar is healed - i.e. no scabs and no signs of infection. You can ask your GP to confirm you’re good to go at your 6 week check.
Is my scar too old?
While newer scars will reap the most benefits from massage, mature scars can improve too. It’s never too late to show your scar some love.
Will it hurt?
You may feel some period pain-like discomfort after your treatment, this can last a couple of days. If you are menstruating at the time of your treatment, you may notice an increase in bleeding and you may also pass more clots. Because of this you might want to schedule your appointment around your period.
Do I need to shave?
Nope! You may choose to trim to minimise any pulling on the area but shaving isn’t necessary. In fact, some people may find that shaving leads to more irritation of the area and may slightly increase risk of infection. So if you’re prone to razor burn or in grown hairs from shaving, it’s probably best to leave it.
What should I wear?
Loose fitting clothing that provides easy access to your scar. We also have shorts, gowns and towels available to keep you covered/warm!
Will you share pictures?
We will take progress photos with your permission for our own records. You may also want to take your own progress photos. We will always ask before sharing any pictures publicly (we won’t be offended if you say no!), and photos will be anonymised.
Should I put bio oil on my scar?
Yes and no. Moisture is good for scars, as is the process of rubbing in oil - think of it like a mini massage! However there are lots of products that are far more effective than bio oil. We can recommend which is best based on your scar and your budget.
How many treatments will I need?
Some people notice changes after their very first treatment, others within 2-4 treatments. The amount of treatments you need will depend on your goals, the age of your scar, and how well you scar healed. (And how good you are at doing your homework between treatments, the more homework you do, the less you’ll need me!)
