Would you have a Ring Dinger?

My answer? No

For those of you who haven’t seen the viral youtube clips yet, a ring dinger, or a Y-strap adjustment involves quickly pulling on the head/neck to distract the spine. If you love the sound of cracking, you’ll love these videos!

Why not?

  • Not enough reasearch: some research into cervical distraction has been done - however this is a slow, gentle mobilisation. I’ve not been able to find any research into the Ring Dinger itself in terms of both safety and efficacy

  • We have other options: there are other options (that have been researched!) we can use to help things such as neck and back pain (e.g. exercise, manipulating the upper back, and more)

  • I’m a cynic: if someone is posting something shocking you’ve gotta wonder is it more about helping people, or more about views? Especially when a lot of the viral clips are of young women in tight sports gear!

I don’t perform any treatments on my patients that I wouldn’t have myself, nor my loved ones! So apologies, if you want a Ring Dinger, you’ll have to find another chiropractor!
